DSU Timeline: 1931-1940

1931

  • Fall Enrollment of 250.
  • E.A. Bixler, was Acting President (April 1931-1933) . He had been with Eastern since 1919,

  • Sigma Tau Delta(above top) was an honorary English Fraternity. Delta Psi Omega(above bottom) was an honorary dramatics fraternity.
  • Coach Curtis's third year here was most successful at Eastern. He took a leave for study and John Burns managed the team in his absence.

  • Industrial Education Associationwas recently formed on campus. It's members promoted industrial education and met in the Mechanical Drawing Room.

1932

  • Eastern State Normal School Lost its 4-year status in a state referendum.

1933

  • The Beadle Club was founded.

1935

  • Roadway from southwest corner of campus eliminated, spaded and seeded to lawn, sidewalk added.
  • The Library had grown to 15,000 volumes and occupied half of the basement and half of the first floor of East Wing (Kennedy Hall).
  • A health service office was setup in a room located on second floor of East Wing (Kennedy Hall). A student lounge was in the adjoining room.

1936

  • Girton House was made into a home for the President of the College. The Plumbing & Heating system were redone, the roof was re-shingled and new floors were laid. The Lowry's moved in and were the houses longest tenants.
  • Gertrude Gill wrote a book used in the classroom 'How to Teach Poetry'

1937

  • The Beadle Centennial Celebration occurred, it was sponsored by the S.D. Education Association in honor of the 100 year anniversary of the General's birth.
  • 132 Students graduated this year.
  • The Eastern Press Club was formed.

1938

  • Eastern State Normal School 4-year program was approved but not funded.
  • Room and Board at East Hall ranged in cost from $57 to $60 per quarter.

1939

  • The library had grown to 20,000 volumes.
  • 153 students graduated this year.

1940

  • Tuition $33.00 per quarter. The total cost for nine-months school term was still about $280.00.
  • In October, a homecoming parade was held on Eastern Day - this was the first time since 1927 that they held a parade.
  • The first Parents Day’s was held.
