1961

  • Tuition for resident students was $198.00 and non-resident tuition was $366.00 per nine-month school term.
  • The Lake County Historical Museum (later called the Smith-Zimmerman Historical Museum) was built on the college campus and donated to the State of South Dakota by George G. Smith, and Miss Lillian Zimmerman. The initial donation was $75,000 with an additional $16,000 provided through the course of construction. This gift was in memory of their parents.

1963

  • After being used for 46 years, the Campus School (Beadle High School) was destroyed by a fire on January 19, 1963, leaving 350 students without a school (images below). The school had been used to prepare students to teach in elementary and secondary schools.

  • The campus rented the old hospital (later purchased and named Heston Hall) to house the grade school students in the basement, second, and third floors.

  • The name of the college officially changed to General Beadle State College.
  • A three story brick structure was built. It was named Zimmerman Hall. Its dimensions were 32 x 263 feet. It housed 128 women students with 2 students per 6 x 14 room. The campus cafeteria was located in the south corner of the first floor. It was named after the Zimmerman family in recognition of the many contributions the family made to Lake County, rural education, General Beadle State College, and the community.

1965

  • Higbie Hall (pictured below) was built. It is a 4 story dormitory which houses 152 students. It was named after Edgar C. Higbie.

  • Enrollment - 992 students.
  • Trojan Center (TC) built. This was a student center, it housed conference rooms, the bookstore, office spaces, a lounge and a meditation center. Dedication of Higbie Hall and the Trojan Center was held September 23, 1965.

  • East Hall began a renovation project to convert from a dorm to a class building. The renovation would include converting dorm rooms to classrooms, administrative offices, and a modern lecture auditorium.

  • This year the college staged its first Miss General Beadle State College Pageant.

  • The Madison Community Hospital, which was originally built in 1920, was purchased by the State of South Dakota for $85,000. It is a three-story reinforced concrete building with brick veneer. It was later renamed Heston Hall after John W. Heston, the President of the college from 1905-1920.

  • The Union Board(pictured below) was established. They planned the activities and social functions at the Trojan Center. They sponsored many socials and games, showed free movies on the weekends, and hosted art exhibits and lectures.

  • The search for the 1968 Helen of Troy began in 1967 when campus organizations selected representative co-eds.

  • Sixty trees were donated and planted on campus.
  • The Karl E. Mundt Library (pictured below) was built. At this time, the library had 120,000 volumes. The library's lower level houses the Karl E. Mundt Historical and Educational Foundation and Archives. The manuscript collection and artifacts of Karl E. Mundt are housed there. The mural that is located over the entrance of the Mundt Library features early Egyptian hieroglyphics that depict the history of the written word.

  • Although Miss C. Ruth Habeger and Miss Leota Van Ornum had recently retired, the 1968 Trojan yearbook was dedicated to them for their combined total of 72 years of dedicated service in the fields of science and physical education.
  • A new game room (pictured below) was created in the lower level of the Trojan Center. The original upstairs snack bar had become overcrowded and was able to expand.

  • June Emry Hall was built and was able to house 156 students. It was named in recognition of the outstanding contribution to education that Dr. June Emry made to Dakota State College and the Madison Community. Emry Hall is a 4-story, brick residence hall built for women students. It is a 56 foot X 131 foot building with rooms 11 x 15 feet.
