1971

  • A new arbor was put in the rose garden. Miss Thelma DeForest, retiring Dean of Women, volunteered to care for the rose bushes.
  • The DSC Football team won the 1971 Boot Hill Bowl.

  • A new Science Center was built, later named the C. Ruth Habeger Science Center. Thebuilding was completed in August. It housed the department of biological science, mathematics, medical records, physical science, and part of the behavioral sciences. It consisted of 35,000 square feet containing 2 large lecture rooms, a 200 seat auditorium, 10 laboratories/classrooms, 9 service areas, a greenhouse, a herbarium, and offices.

Trojan Mascot History Club

  • A new DSC honorary social science and business fraternity was organized, Sigma Tau Sigma.
  • Heston Hall became ready for use in August. The cost was $436,000 and was modernized for approximately two-thirds the cost of a new construction. The Sioux Falls architect Fritzel, Kroeger, Griffin, & Berg designed the building. The building was to be used for administration offices and computer data center.

  • A course over the Art of Karate was offered by the Physical Education Department.
  • A new brick ceramic kiln was built by the students.

  • The old power plant and smokes tack were demolished.
  • Tyrrell Physical Plant was built in tribute to Claude Tyrell and Preston Tyrrell. This was a 12,270 square foot building that housed the campus heating plant, motor pool, storage warehouse, the Physical Plant offices and carpentry, plumbing, and electrical shops.
  • Commencement exercises honored 298 graduates.

  • Enrollment was 710 students. DSC was under the administrative control of the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. Dr. Richard Bowen, President from 1974-1976 presided over Vermillion and Springfield campuses as well.

  • Dr. Carrol Krause was named Provost of both DSC and USD/Springfield while Dr. Clyde Brashier was named DSU Dean of Instruction.

  • Trojan Yearbook was dedicated to the memory of Karl Mundt. Karl and Mary Mundt both taught at DSC. Karl Mundt died on August 16, 1974.

  • The Host Corps was started this year as a special public relations group made up of DSC students. They acted as student hosts, gave tours of the campus at college functions, and assisted the admissions office during campus visitations by prospective students and parents.
